Happy (almost) 2019, everyone!
I hope you all got to spend the past week of holiday festivities with loved ones and are looking forward to celebrating the end of yet another fabulous year. Even though winter hasn't really kicked in yet, AKA we haven't gotten any snow to stick, it's still fairly cold outside. In addition to the unfriendly temperatures, it's drab, dreary, and snow-less in Madison at the moment. I don't know about you, but I do NOT want to be outdoors when it looks like this (current mood outside my front window):

For the majority of my friends, this ugly weather means looking for ways to stay busy and entertained indoors. Though I'm definitely a winter lover, I prefer my cold weather to be paired with flaky precipitation. Because the weather gods have failed to bring us my favorite form of moisture that falls from the sky, I decided to do some research on what to do when you don't want to be outside. Therefore, here's your simplified guide to my favorite events in Madison in January 2019.
Where: Madison Children's Museum When: Wednesday, January 2nd from 5:00-8:00PM How much: FREE Who can come: The whole family What: On the first open Wednesday night of each month, Madison Children's Museum gives free admission to every. single. person! Though "children" is in the title, this museum is fun for the whole family. Among the many areas to discover is an art studio, an entire exhibit dedicated to the life and work of Frank Lloyd Wright (a Wisconsin native), and endless exploring and hands-on adventures. Even the stairwells are interactive and educational!
Where: Madison's Alliant Energy Center When: Saturday, January 19th from 2:00-6:00PM How much: $50.00+tax for general admission ticket, which includes unlimited sampling and a fancy, new tasting glass Who can come: YOU as long as you're 21 years or older What: Come to Madison for the 10th annual Beer & Cheese Fest brought to you by Isthmus. With more than 20 cheesemakers, over 120 breweries expected, and several other food vendors attending, there will be no shortage of deliciousness. You can also expect to partake in a Silent Disco sponsored by Ian's Pizza (free slice of 'za with participation), request songs from the Piano Fondue Dueling Pianos, and take Beer & Cheese pairing classes with Metcalfe's Market and Door County Brewing Company. This is an event that the 21+ year olds will not want to miss! See below for lodging and transportation information.
Where: Multiple restaurants in Madison When: Sunday, January 20th through Friday, January 25th How much: Varies, $15.00-$35.00/person Who can come: Anyone and everyone, as long as you show up with an appetite What: This has to be one of my favorite events in Madison for the whole year. Offered twice a year, 40+ restaurants offer (3) options of (3) course meals, specially made for Restaurant Week. Some of the establishments offer lunches starting at $15.00 and most offer dinners between $25.00 and $35.00. All YOU have to do is show up to one of the participating eateries and pick one of the Restaurant Week options. Make sure you ask for the special menu because some restaurants don't outright advertise it. Because most of the dinners are such a great deal, it's a good idea to make reservations in advance; downtown Madison is usually bumpin' during Restaurant Week! The participating restaurants as of today, December 26th, are listed below.
Visit Madison Magazine and check out the restaurants listed on the right hand side of the webpage to view menu options. P.S. As far as I know, there's no limit as to how many times during the week you can partake, so make sure to fast January 1st-19th!
Where: Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center When: Friday, January 25th from 3:00-8:00PM AND Saturday, January 26th from 9:00AM-4:00PM How much: $5.00/ticket OR free with a donation of (2) non-perishable food items Who can come: Whoever is interested in a healthy lifestyle What: Engage in (2) days of wellness and health classes with over 70 exhibitors! There will be a ton of fitness classes, cooking demonstrations, and presentations by local health-centric businesses, all of which are offered free with admission! You'll want to start signing up for classes when registration opens in January 2019 to secure your spot in the classes and presentations that interest you the most. Some of the featured classes include how to teach your brain to cope with stress, healthy goal setting, yoga, Zumba®, and tons more! If you're a health/fitness freak or simply want to learn more about how to treat your body right, this is the event for you.
Where:HopCat When: Tuesday, January 29th from 6:30-9:30PM How much: $35.00+tax/person Who can come: Only the 21+ year olds What: Head over to HopCat on W. Gorham St to enjoy a four-course meal skillfully paired with four different, delectable MobCraft brews. If you're not sure you'll like what's paired, check out the menu below. You WILL NOT be disappointed.
Though there are plenty more events throughout Madison just in the month of January alone, it would take weeks for me to explain each one to you. Therefore, feel free to explore the Isthmus event page or Visit Madison for more suggestions on how to spend your first month of 2019!
